The BOM app makes rain forecasts more understandable

The BOM Weather app has been updated to make precipitation forecasts easier to understand.

According to meteorological officethe app is used by millions of Australians, and the daily rainfall forecast is one of the most viewed parts of the Bureau’s forecast.

But it seems that this information is often misinterpreted.

So the app has been changed to show “Rain Today” when rain is expected, along with the predicted range in millimeters, e.g. “4-10mm”, plus the chance of those amounts occurring, e.g. “75% (high) change of at least 4mm, 50% (medium) chance of at least 6mm, 25% (low) chance of at least 10mm”.

When rain is unlikely, it will simply display “No rain”.

The Bureau believes this will provide all Australians, including farmers, event planners and tourism operators, with the rainfall information they need to make informed decisions.

“With millions of Australians relying on the Bureau’s rainfall forecast to make informed decisions, this change means customers can be confident in their understanding of the amount of rain expected in their area,” the Bureau said. , adding that it continues to look for ways to improve the way information is presented and welcomes user feedback through the app.

BOM Weather is available for android and iOS.
